General Questions
Q: What is a Trikke Cambering Vehicle?A: A Trikke cambering vehicle is a human powered 3-wheeled vehicle that has no mechanical drive train. It's articulated frame can lean into turns while keeping all three wheels in contact with the ground. The 3-wheeled Trikke stance provides riders with excellent stability at all speeds, including at a dead stop. Trikke offers a marked improvement in balance, control and stability over traditional machines like scooters, skateboards, inline skates and even bikes. What really sets this new machine apart is its novel method of propulsion. With the exception of inline skates, traditional machines have a mechanical drivetrain (chain or belt drive), or they require that you keep kicking-off from the pavement like scooters and skateboards to propel them. Despite the fact that a cambering vehicle has no drive train, a rider can propel it theoretically indefinitely with an extraordinary level of efficiency. Though designs for three wheeled cambering vehicles of all kinds date back nearly 100 years, patented Trikke cambering products are the first ever cambering vehicle to be produced and distributed world wide.
Q: What propels a cambering vehicle?
A: You propel your Trikke with a coordinated technique of simultaneously leaning and turning it in the same direction. This is the figurative ‘power plant’ of a Trikke. In short, you pilot the Trikke down a serpentine path much like a skier slaloming down a hill. Unlike a skier, these turns actually propel the Trikke cambering vehicle rather than control its downhill speed – although these turns can also be used to control a Trikke’s descent down a hill. Breaking it down, when you as the rider enter a left hand turn, you also rock the handlebars to the left. You then follow this up with a smooth transition to a right hand turn, also rocking the handlebars to the right – and so on and so on. When you are more experienced, you can add more advanced body movements – particularly outward kicks like those used in inline skating, and the throwing of upper body weight into the direction of the turn to dramatically increase speed and acceleration.
Dispelling Some Trikke Myths
Q: Does it only take a short time to learn to ride the Trikke?
A: Most people take between 5 and 30 minutes to get the basic ‘rock-n-roll’ riding technique mastered. Click here or on the ‘How-to Guides’ link above in the main menu to watch the step-by-step videos on how to ride the Trikke. All LandZooom.com customers are provided with a CD-version of this website when you order, so you can watch the videos on your computer irrespective of your internet speed.
Q: Doesn't a Trikke take up a lot of room when you ride it?
A: One of the most common misconceptions about riding a Trikke cambering vehicle is that it requires a great deal of space to ride. Because you have to slalom to propel yourself, people seem to think that you will take up an entire bike path and disrupt traffic. This is just not true. Trikke is like a fish. It requires that you ride a slalom-like course to propel it - much in the way a fish has to wiggle to swim. Like a fish, you can propel a Trikke at 11 k/ph by making 5 wide sweeping turns in the time span of ten seconds or by making 12 smaller turns in the same 10 seconds. You're going the same speed in both cases merely by changing the frequency and width of your turns. In essence, the Trikke takes up as much room as you want it to. You can take up the space of a typical bicycle or inline skater and make quick, small, sharp turns, OR you can own the surface by making big wide sweeping turns which is great fun and a great deal like skiing or surfing, when you have the freedom to do so. Like a racing car that begs you to punch it, the Trikke begs you to carve deep turns. How great is that? You have to have fun to make a Trikke go. And, the Trikke is equally at home on the shoulder of a road, being pushed to the limit by a rider making small, sharp serpentine turns.
Technical Questions
Q: Where can I ride the Trikke legally? Should I wear a helmet?
A: The legalities of where you can ride the Trikke differ from state to state, province to province, and country to country. In Queensland, Australia, where LandZooom.com is based, we have been advised by the Queensland Police Service at the time of publishing that the Trikke can be ridden on roads up to 60 kilometres an hour. In terms of riding on roads, it is safer to ride on roads where there is a wider shoulder, to provide for the ‘fishtail’ turns you must make, as discussed in a FAQ answer above. Please check with your local authorities where it is legal to ride the Trikke; LandZooom.com does not provide advice on your local riding legalities in your location. Bike paths and trails are often ideal places to ride in a safe environment, before seeking advice about progressing to riding on local roads.
You should always wear a helmet while Trikking, and in many countries, states, and provinces, including Queensland, Australia, it is compulsory. Apart from the law, wearing a helmet makes plain good sense, to protect your head and your brain from any unforeseen injury. You can also wear additional safety equipment, including knee pads and elbow pads – we particularly suggest doing this for long, steep, fast downhill runs. NB: You ride your Trikke at your own risk. Neither LandZooom.com nor Trikke Tech Inc, nor any of their respective affiliates take any responsibility for your Trikking – this responsibility rests with you. Please carefully follow all safety advice in the Trikke Manual and on the stickers placed on the Trikke vehicle.
Q: Is it easy to assemble the Trikke from the box when it arrives?
A: Assembly of all the Trikke models is very straight forward, particularly with the assistance of the Assembly Videos and Manuals viewable on this site . Please follow the instructions in the applicable assembly videos, Trikke Manual, T12 brake adjustment manual, and Trikke Skki Assembly Slideshow. Please don’t rush or step ahead, but ensure that every assembly stage is completed thoroughly. LandZooom.com provides all customers with a CD-version of this website when you order, so you can watch all videos on this site on your own computer, irrespective of your internet speed.
If after reviewing the videos and manuals you are still having problems with assembly, we suggest you take your Trikke to a local bike shop that has a qualified bicycle mechanic. Although the mechanic may have never seen a Trikke before (!), if you provide them with the Trikke Manual the mechanic should be able to complete the assembly for a small charge, and voila! - you will be Zoooming!
Q: Are the inflatable wheels of the T12 Roadster and the T8 Convertible interchangeable?
A: No, the T12 Roadster and T8 Convertible inflatable wheels cannot be interchanged. These two Trikke models have very different fork configurations and completely different brake systems (disc vs. scrub).
Q: The back wheels are wearing on an angle. How do I know when it is time to replace the rear wheels? Are they difficult to change?A: Rotate the rear wheels (remove and re-install them to now rotate in the opposite direction), so each wheel will wear the other side of the wheel surface. It's very easy to remove and replace the wheels – you just need two 5mm Allen wrenches. You can buy replacement wheels at the LandZooom.com website (soon) when needed.
